Project Diriyah is a giga-project under the Public Investment Fund with a $62.2 billion investment. From residential living to educational and cultural opportunities, this development aims to be a sustainable landmark, incorporating initiatives focused on water conservation, energy efficiency, wellness, culture, heritage preservation, and climate change resilience. The city is meticulously designed to be 100% walkable, promoting a healthy lifestyle for its residents.
Diriyah encompasses various subprojects, including the At-Turaif District, Wadi Hanifah, Bujairi Terrace, King Salman Square, King Salman University, and the House of Al Saud Museum. With 38 hotels and resorts under construction, 20,000+ residential units in unique Najdi design, 9 museums, iconic landmarks, restored areas at Wadi Hanifah, numerous job opportunities, mosques, public parks, and an anticipated 100,000+ residents, Diriyah is poised to become a thriving cultural hub. The project envisions 50 million+ yearly visits by 2030.
The history of Project Diriyah traces back to the unveiling of Vision 2030 in April 2016 by Crown Prince Mohammad bin Salman, who recognised the potential of preserving and showcasing Saudi Arabia's rich cultural heritage. Diriyah, considered the birthplace of the first Saudi state and home to historical sites, palaces, and traditional Najdi architecture, became a focal point for this initiative.
In 2017, the Royal Commission for Riyadh City (RCRC) was established to oversee the development of the capital city and its surrounding areas, including Diriyah. Diriyah Gate Development Authority (DGDA) was subsequently formed to specifically manage and implement the Diriyah Gate project. The development envisions a thriving cultural and lifestyle hub, complete with museums, galleries, entertainment venues, hospitality facilities, and residential areas, all while preserving the site's historical significance.
Key milestones include the launch of the Diriyah Gate Master Plan in November 2019, outlining the various phases of development. The groundbreaking ceremony took place in November 2019, marking the start of construction. As the project progresses, it aims to contribute significantly to Saudi Arabia's tourism sector and enhance the overall quality of life for residents and visitors alike.
