Imam Abdulrahman Bin Faisal University (IAU), previously known as the University of Dammam (UoD), holds a prominent position as one of the oldest and foremost institutions in the field of medicine in Saudi Arabia's Eastern Province. Named after Abdul Rahman bin Faisal, the last ruler of the Second Saudi State and the father of King Abdulalziz ibn Saud, the university plays a pivotal role in the region's academic landscape. Dr. Abdullah Al-Rubaish serves as its President, and it was formerly a part of King Faisal University, now exclusively located in Al-hasa.
Receiving a significant transformation, the university adopted its current name, Imam Abdulrahman Bin Faisal University, during King Salman bin Abdelaziz's visit to Dammam in November 2016. The main campus is strategically situated in the coastal area of Al-Rakah, positioned between Dammam and Khobar, with various colleges spread across the Eastern Province.
Admissions to IAU are based on standardised national exams, and students are placed in tracks according to their grades. The competition for majors is intense, with top-performing students securing spots in their preferred colleges. The medical track, renowned for its competitiveness, only admits the top 140 students into the College of Medicine. In May 2021, Dr. Ebtisam Mohammed Al-Mathal, the Dean of Human Resources and a professor of parasitology in the Science Faculty, assumed the role of Secretary of the Board of Trustees at the university, contributing to its continued growth and excellence.
Imam Abdulrahman Bin Faisal University (IAU) traces its roots back to its predecessor, the University of Dammam (UoD). The University of Dammam was founded 1975 with two colleges - the College of Medicine and the College of Architecture. Both male and female students have been enrolled at the University since its inception.
Established in Dammam, Saudi Arabia, the university has evolved over the years into a leading institution in the Eastern Province, particularly excelling in the field of medicine. The university's name pays homage to Abdul Rahman bin Faisal, the last ruler of the Second Saudi State and the father of King Abdulalziz ibn Saud, the founder and first monarch of Saudi Arabia.
Other colleges followed: Applied Medical Sciences (1995), Dentistry (2001), Applied Studies and Community Services (2003) and Nursing.
Originally a part of King Faisal University, the institution underwent a significant transformation and received its current name, Imam Abdulrahman Bin Faisal University, during a visit by King Salman bin Abdelaziz to Dammam in November 2016.
