The university's establishment dates back to 1975, initiated by Royal Decree No. H / 67 1395 e, in the eastern region of the country. Initially, in its inaugural year, it utilised leased buildings, later transitioning to prefabricated structures for its colleges in subsequent years. The first four scientific colleges comprised the College of Agricultural and Food Sciences and the College of Veterinary Medicine and Animal Husbandry, situated at the main campus in Al Ahsa. Additionally, the College of Architecture and Planning and the College of Medicine and Medical Sciences were established in Dammam. Subsequently, in response to the evolving needs of the Kingdom, Royal Decree No. 7 / b / 11155 was issued, with the approval of the Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques and the Chairman of the Board of Higher Education. This decree led to the founding of the College of Education in 1981 and the Faculty of Administrative Sciences and Planning in 1984. Notably, the King Fahd University Hospital, the university's teaching hospital, is located in Khobar, while construction of a newer hospital near the main campus is currently underway.
In 1996, under Royal Decree No. 7 / b / 11155, and with the endorsement of the Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques and the Chairman of the Board of Higher Education, initiatives were made to establish separate dental and technical laboratories from the College of Medicine and Medical Science in Dammam. This resulted in the creation of the Faculty of Dentistry and the Faculty of Applied Medical Sciences in Klitin. The university's establishment aimed to revitalise and strengthen scientific research across various fields and disciplines.
Over the years, KFU has demonstrated a commitment to research excellence by engaging in intensive activities conducted by colleges and research centers.
